Article marketing is one of my favorite forms of traffic generation. Although it builds traffic slowly and sometimes sporadically, I like it because the clicks are generally from people who already like me.
What I mean by "already like me" is that they already identify with my style, and like it enough to click through to my site. This makes this person a far more qualified lead than one that clicks through from just about any ad source out there.
How does article marketing work? Article marketing involves writing articles that pertain to the subject matter of your website, and submitting these articles for publication online.
There are many online directories that publish articles for the purpose of disseminating good information, or even to add web pages to their own site. Whatever their purpose, it doesn't matter to me. I simply like the fact that they publish my article, market it online, and people have a chance to read my article.
One of the keys to the effectiveness of article writing is to include a link back to your site at the bottom of the article. When the reader has finished reading your article, if they like your style and want to know more about you, they will click through to your site. Now, if you set this process up for maximum list building effect, you will have that link go to a squeeze page that collects their information first, then they will directed to your site after they have submitted their name and email address.
You will write informative articles about your web site topic. One thing here about giving away information. Sometimes you may feel as though you don't want to give people your best information, especially if you sell information on your web site. However, people will evaluate your for-sale information on the quality of your free information. If you are just giving away useless "filler information", your reader will assume that that is the same quality information they will receive from you when they pay you for it.
If, on the other hand, you offer truly valuable information in your articles or other free content, then your potential customers will be able to effectively evaluate the quality of your material.
What to write about? Write about anything that gives your potential customer information that they can really use. For example, if you have a web site that sells office supply products, then the following are good topics:
- How to select a good printer
- The five steps to selecting a good pen
- How to choose the best accounting software
- The best ways to purchase office supplies in bulk
- These are all topics that potential office supply customers will be happy to read.

Blogging
A blog is basically a content management system which allows you to post content which is organised by date and category. All content is displayed in reverse chronological order. Many years ago, blogs were used as online diaries, however they have took on a business dimension more recently.
A blog can be a very potent tool for bringing in traffic. The great thing is that there are lots of free blog providers such as: Blogger, Typepad, Live Journal and numerous others.
There are two ways that blogs can be useful.
Firstly, when you set up a blog focusing on a particular niche, you can submit your blog to many available niche directories, and this will be a source of traffic. If you post good content (and good content can be found for free online), you can build up repeat visitors to your blog.
Secondly, you can use your blog(s) to link back to your main website(s) where you are promoting or selling something. This is related to the field of search engine optimization. If you build a range of blogs (all this can be done for free) using different blog platform providers, you can link back from each blog to your main website. This is a technique used to boost search engine rankings and hence increasing traffic.
Forum Participation
Another way to get targeted traffic is to do a search on Google and Yahoo to find discussion forums related to the product you are selling or niche that you are targeting.
Let's say that you are going to promote an ebook on hair care. If you do a search for hair care forum on Google you will get plenty of results for discussion forums. In fact, you can try pretty much any niche topic and you are likely to find a fair amount of discussion forums on that subject.
The best thing about this is that you are finding communities who are specifically interested in the type of product that you are selling or promoting as an affiliate.
Forum Participation Tips
- Whenever you sign up to a forum, you have the option of adding a "signature". This is a small piece of text that will show up at the end of every post you make on that forum. You can use this by including links back to your websites with catchy link text.
- Actively participate in the forum discussions and where possible try to find and post answers to questions that people have raised. Do not directly promote your product or website. People generally tend to dislike this. However, if you try to help people initially, they will be naturally drawn to visiting your sites in your signature file, or even if you mention that you have some websites that will be of benefit to them.
- There are some popular forums that are set up as "ad forums" where you can post your ads for free, and they can have pretty large membership base, sometimes running into the hundreds of thousands. An example is TheFreeAdForum.Com. On this particular forum for example, you can post ads or articles, which are there permanently, which means a great source of potential long term traffic from the search engines, as well as an audience that is on the forum already.
Social Bookmarking
Social Bookmarking is not new but it has recently come to the forefront as a way to get traffic and backlinks on demand. Bookmarking is a reliable way to get traffic to your websites.
There are many social bookmarking sites, some are more popular than others but they all work basically the same. They allow you to bookmark any site that you desire and then add tags (keywords) to describe the content of the site you are bookmarking.
The tags act as a way to quickly find your bookmarks without remembering where you put them. This is why the bookmark sites allow you to assign more than one tag.
These bookmark sites allow you to share your personal bookmarks with the public. This is where the term "social" comes into play. When you bookmark a site other people can also find the site that you bookmarked if they enter the same tag that you classified the site under.
Not only can you find the sites that you tagged under certain keywords but so can everyone else.
Like any other good tool there are many uses for it. Bookmarking the pages of your own websites will place your site in front of people that are looking for your kind of content.
This can serve a few purposes:
- Other people who find your content compelling will bookmark your site making it rise in popularity. As it rises in popularity more and more people will bookmark it.
- You get free traffic. If your content is good and other people start bookmarking it then it will gain momentum and you will get more free traffic.
- Some people will find your content interesting enough to place a link from their website to your website giving you a relevant one-way backlink.
The main purpose is to put your site in front of people that are in your niche that may not have otherwise found you.
Using search engines, a potential loyal reader, client or webmaster may never see your content. By bookmarking and tagging your content you are seen and evaluated by humans who then decide if your content is worthwhile.
Bookmarking is an easy way to get recognition for the pages in your website. This is a great way of telling the world that you have new content. People interested in your niche will check it out and, if its good, the reward of free traffic and one-way backlinks will follow.
